Root Canals

Root canal therapy is an essential procedure to treat an infected tooth. If the infection is not treated promptly, the patient may lose the tooth entirely or require more costly and extensive treatment.
At AV Dental Wellness Group in Lancaster, California, we routinely provide root canal treatments to address decay that has spread deep within the tooth. We will also suggest the best restorative solutions to you after the infection has been treated.

Candidates for Root Canal Therapy

Patients suffering from jaw pain, tooth pain, or swelling of the gums may have an infected tooth that requires a root canal procedure.
An infected tooth may be the result of a deeply-rooted cavity or an infection in the root canal itself. If the condition is allowed to spread without treatment, the tooth may need to be extracted.

Root Canal Procedure

During your initial consultation at AV Dental Wellness Group, we will examine your oral cavity to determine if there is an infection, its severity, and if a root canal is a feasible treatment option.
We may also take X-rays to assess the extent of the infection and how close it is to the tooth's nerve in the pulp chamber. When a cavity is present, the pulp is typically likely to already be infected.
Once we determine that a root canal is the best treatment option, he will clean out the decayed parts of your tooth.
Local anesthesia is used to reduce pain and discomfort during the procedure. The decayed tissue from the pulp chamber is carefully removed along with any nerve tissue.
We will then disinfect the tooth's inner chambers before filling them with gutta-percha, a rubber-like medicated material. Finally, the tooth is secured with a temporary filling, and you are given post-operative instructions to help ensure a healthy recovery.
During your next visit, we will assess the healing and remove the temporary filling to prepare the tooth for your permanent restoration, such as a crown.

Benefits of Root Canal Therapy

A root canal saves your natural tooth and helps you avoid tooth extraction. It also relieves pain and prevents additional decay or damage to the affected tooth.
After the procedure is finalized, you will be able to speak, eat, and drink as you normally would, free from pain and discomfort.
